Where to Surf in Bali for Beginners
Bali is a great place for surfing. If you’re a beginner, you might wonder where the best spots are for some Bali surfing. Advanced surfers tend to hang out on the southern coasts, but those new to the sport will want something more mild. Here are the top five surfing locations for beginners to check out:
PADANG PADANG RIGHT
Although Padang Padang is located on the Bukit Peninsula where more advanced surfers hang out, there’s a sandy beach break known as “Right” that is great for beginners. It’s a great place to practice, especially during high tide when you’re guaranteed a long, unbroken wave pattern.
If you’re traveling with others not interested in surfing, the Padang Padang beach is a great location for swimming and laying out in the sun too.
KUTA
Kuta is the most popular surfing location in Bali and also attracts the tourist and nightlife scene, which means it’s usually very crowded. If you’re okay with braving the crowds, the wave and gentler currents at Kuta can be great for learning to surf. Tuban, Legian, and Seminyak beaches are also nearby and good for beginners.
DREAMLAND
Like Padang Padang, Dreamland is a location on the Bukit Peninsula, but on the northwest portion to the north of Uluwatu.
The waves at Dreamland can vary, so be sure to stick with the flatter waves when you arrive and beware of waves that get too high. Otherwise, it’s great for surfers at the beginner levels.
CANGGU
Canggu is another popular location for tourists, and it’s also great for surfers of all experience levels. Beginners can feel at home on the Batu Bolong and Eco Beach areas whenever the swell is mellow.
NUSA LEMBONGAN
Located southeast of Bali’s mainland, Nusa Lembongan is a small island containing many popular breaks with fun names. “Playgrounds” is a smaller swell that is great for beginners and easy to get to by boat ride and best for those wanting to spend more than one day on the island.

BEST TIMES TO SURF IN BALI
Bali has two seasons when it comes to vacationing:
- High season, which is the peak season running between April and October. These are the “dry” months in Bali.
- “Off” season, which is the rest of the year and includes the “wet,” rainy months.
Whichever season you choose depends on preference. High season ensures more sun and more contact with fellow tourists and surfers. But don’t discount the wet season either. It can still have sunny days, plus there’s a better chance the waves will be smaller during wet season, which is ideal for beginners.
