Best Places to Visit During a Kintamani, Bali Retreat
In our part one of retreat ideas in Ubud, we listed some amazing workshop ideas for exploring the Balinese culture during your Bali vacation. Now, let’s talk about another adventurous idea to include in your Ubud, Bali getaway: doing a tour of Kintamani.
Kintamani is a village in northeastern Bali that is right next to Mount Batur. The area is comprised of the Penelokan, Batur, Toya Bungkah, Abung, Kedisan, Songan and Kintamani villages but is often just referred to as Kintamani. It’s a popular area for tours and a great area to explore when staying in Bali!
Here are the key places to visit during a Kintamani tour:
Tegalalang Rice Terraces
These lush, sprawling rice terraces located in the Tegalalang Village are just an easy half hour drive to the north of Ubud. A traditional Balinese cooperative irrigation system was used to design the terraces — and is still used to maintain them. Visiting them is a beautiful, relaxing experience that you don’t want to miss.
The Coffee Plantation
There are many thriving coffee plantations in Bali, including the Luwak Civet Coffee Farm in Kintamani. Not only can you tour the fields and see how the process works up close and personal, but you’ll also be able to taste the coffee and even take a delicious bag home for yourself!
Kintamani Volcano
Visiting the volcano is a must due to its beautifully magnificent panoramic view of Mount Batur and Lake Batur. You’ll get a bird’s eye-type view of the old Balinese villages surrounding the lake too. For an even more adventurous time, you can even travel down the road along the shore of the lake to Ulun Danu Batur temple, Toya Bungkah, and some hot springs.
Tirta Empul Temple and Holy Spring
Tirta Empul is the actual name of a water source in the temple and means “holy water spring.” The site has been around since 960 AD and is a great opportunity to visit an ancient part of central Balinese culture — along with revel in the beauty of the crystal clear water and swirling sand. On certain days, you might even see locals there taking holy baths in the temple’s bathing areas. It only takes around 30 minutes by car to reach the temple, and it’s well worth the travel.
Gunung Kawi
Located to the northeast of Ubud, Gunung Kawi is a funerary complex and temple in Tampaksiring. The monuments here are believed to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favorite queens. When you take a look on the north shrine, you’ll find an inscription that says, “Haji Lumahing Jalu,” which means “the king made a temple here.”
