Ayurveda is the oldest medical system in the world which originated in India thousands of years ago.
In sanskrit: “Ayur” means life “Veda” means knowledge or science
Ayurveda literally translates as “Life Knowledge” or “Life science”
This system is the sister science to yoga, it is the foundation of health and wellness that goes alongside the practice of the physical asanas, meditation and pranayama. Its ancient 4000 year knowledge & principles aim to rid the body of toxins with tonics, foods, vitamins and self-care rituals such as specialized massages that maintain health & wellbeing.
Ayurveda is based on 3 Dosha’s, for each Dosha there is a combination 1-2 of the 5 elements that exist within the body. The aim of Ayurveda is to create balance within by understanding what elements need to come into balance to make the body whole.
What are the dosha’s?
Ayurveda sees us as usually predominant in one Dosha. The aim is to become Tri-dosha, meaning your entire system is in balance with all the elements.
The doshas are: Vata (wind/air), Pitta (fire) & Kapha (earth).
VATA = ether+air
PITTA = fire (sometimes describes as fire + water as fire resides in water in our bodies)
KAPHA = water + earth
Our biological existence is a dance of these three doshas, therefore our life is a multicolour experience of balances and imbalances that influence our body, mind & emotions which then affect our health in general.
